| May 27th, What a slacker I am. Here the month is about over and I have yet post a journal entry. No need to fear I am still growing pumpkins. I have just been extremely busy this month. I was in Africa for the first 10 days of the month and have been struggling to catch up since then. The plants were left in the care of children. I am pleased to report they did an excellent job and all the plants survived the frost and the wind. They day I returned home I was welcomed by gale force winds that destroyed two greenhouses (the first time I have lost any to wind). One was old (4 years) plastic and it just shredded, the other was the long greenhouse. I was able to get things put back together before it froze that night. I will try to measure the plants tomorrow but it looks like the vines will be between 3 and 4 feet in lenght (shorter then last year but better then average). I had one that was showing a flat vine but it split out and is doing well. May 28th, Actually measured the pumpkins today. The main vine lengths are as follows. 904 Stelts- 5'3", 1347 Wallace and 930 Christensen, and 1556 Werner are all at 5', The 1003 Christensen, 1207 Young are at 4'6", the 1385 Jutras and 1504 Wallace are at 4' and the 1071 Christensen (Brandi's plant) is at 3'6". The start is not as good as last year but still respectable. The 1003 and the 930 are double planted. One of these will have to be culled. I would like to grow the 1003 but I think the 930 has better chance for a bigger pumpkin |
