Where: Little Elk Creek
When: July 8th, 2006
Who: Blake and Brian
How Far: 10 miles
Vertical Distance 3700'
This was another of the hikes for Blake's merit badge as well as for me getting in shape. This is best photo of the trip. I have no idea what kind of flower this is but the I thought it was a great photo. The flower is not in my book so I need to get another book.
The original goal was to make it to the top of Mt. Baird but we fell a little short. The ridge up was steep, rocky and my boy was not going to make it. We stopped about 300' short of the summit. We still had plenty of rocks to contend with as evidenced by the pictures below. We were also treated with wonderful vistas and the pleasure of seeing 18 goats. In one of the photos (when blown up full size) you can actually see the goats on the hill behind Blake.
Photo A- Blake with Palisades in the back ground. Need to work on the photography to get the sky right
B- Looking up towards the head of Little Elk Creek. The upper portion pictured here is quite picturesque
C-The ridge up to the summit. The goat is the little white spot just above and to the left of the highest patch of snow.
D- Coming down is always harder then going up.
I think the flower is a columbine of some sort
